Pontotoc County Commissioners voted Monday to notify Oklahoma Department of Transportation the county would not be accepting potentially hazardous cross town beams used in constructing bridges.
“It sounded like a good deal but when we got down to it and got to checking, we’re not sure it was such a good deal,” said District One Commissioner Gary Starns.
He said the commissioners’ main concern was that the beams were covered in lead-based paint that would have to be removed.
District Two Commissioner Danny Davis said hauling, storage and clean-up costs for the beams would be more expensive than purchasing beams from a contractor.
“We saw that and didn’t want to approve it with that in there,” Starns said. “That’s why we’re rescinding the minutes.”
Commissioners voted to accept a bid from Jimmy Pingleton Homes for renovations of Pontotoc County Agri-Plex’s kitchen for $26,016.28.
