Coalgate woman dies in wreck

A Coalgate woman died Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle collision in Atoka County.

The wreck occurred at 3:25 p.m. on U.S. 75 one mile west of Atoka.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Tommy Allen said 69-year-old Vonda Steel of Coalgate was driving a 1997 Mercury east when she crossed the center line and crashed into a 1996 GMC driven west by 55-year-old Russell Lester of Centerpoint.

Steel was pronounced dead at the scene from head and arm injuries, Allen said. Her body was taken to Brown’s Funeral Home in Atoka, pending further arrangements.

Lester was taken by personal vehicle to Atoka Medical Center where he was treated for arm injuries and released.

Allen said Steel was not wearing a seat belt and listed the cause of the wreck as “left of center in meeting.” Atoka police, Atoka firefighters and Atoka EMS also responded.
