Dr. Larry Birney, executive director of the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET), tendered his resignation Wednesday effective Friday, April 29.

According to Norman McNickle, CLEET Council chairman, Birney’s employment was discussed during executive session at three special meetings held since March 16 — including yesterday’s CLEET Council meeting.

“We formed a committee to look into some internal issues,” McNickle said. “There was an executive session where those items were discussed. Following the discussion of Dr. Birney he just felt it was in the best interest of the organization to tender his resignation and it was accepted.”

McNickle said the discussions concerned personnel issues and couldn’t say whether or not Birney is accused of any wrongdoing.

“It’s a personnel matter,” he said. “It occurred during executive session, so I can’t go into detail.”

CLEET Assistant Director Steve Emmons was appointed interim director to fill Birney’s position which he had held since 2008.
