Babette Rossen opened a gift-wrapped shoe box to reveal the items inside: A pair of pink shoes, a small tote bag, crayons, a toothbrush and toothpaste.

When the Stonewall woman packs a shoe box for girls, she likes to include hair ribbons and other trinkets. If she’s packing a box for a boy, she usually includes Nerf-style balls and other gifts that would appeal to boys.

Along with the gifts, Rossen usually tucks a Christmas card with a short note into each box. She has thought about adding a photo of herself but hasn’t done it yet.
