The Byng High School girls’ and boys’ tennis teams, each bolstered by perfection in doubles play, rolled to championships in the McAlester Tournament on Monday.
The Lady Pirates totaled 31 points to edge out host McAlester, which totaled 29. The Byng boys scored 32 points on their way to the title, while McAlester ended up with 27.
In girls play, the No. 1 doubles team of Kaitlyn Atkeson and Lanie McGaha each went 3-0 for the tournament as the pair posted a 6-4, 6-2 decision over McAlester in the finals.
At No. 2 doubles, Byng’s Andrea Burnsworth and Amanda Daniels registered a perfect 3-0 mark after knocking off the Byng ‘B’ team’s Sam Jones and Halle Williams in the championship, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Jones and Williams went 2-1 for the tournament.
Byng’s No. 2 singles entrant, Kalina Popova, settled for second place and a 2-1 record in the event after falling to McAlester’s Precious Crawford in the finals by a 6-3, 6-3 count. Also for the Lady Pirates, Hannah Fortner beat Bixby’s Hannah Hernadi, 6-1, 6-0 for third place in the tournament in No. 1 singles.
In boys action, Byng scored a 32 while McAlester was second at 27.
The Pirates’ two doubles teams of Kai Jorgensen and Neil Jorgensen at No. 1 and Montana Sellers and Paul Snyder at No. 2 were perfect for the tourney. The Jorgensen pair went 3-0, while Sellers and Snyder went 2-0 for the event.
The Jorgensens knocked off the team from Seminole, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the title match, and Sellers and Snyder combined for a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Seminole to go 2-0 for the tournament.
In singles play, McAlester’s Chance Sistrunk topped Byng’s Caleb Shaw at the No. 1 spot while McAlester’s Eric Borengasser was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over the Pirates’ Dylan West at No. 2.
Shaw and West were each 2-1 for the tournament.
“Even though we lost, it was a good showing at No. 1 singles by Shaw. Sistrunk is a really good player and will probably be a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in Class 5A at state,” said Byng head coach Alan Simpson
The Byng girls are back in action today in the Clinton Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center. The Byng junior varsity boys will also participate in that tournament.
Next for the Byng varsity boys will be Friday at Heritage Hall in Oklahoma City in the Tournament of Champions. The tournament features the 2013 state champion and runner-up squads from Classes 4A, 5A and 6A. Two other at-large teams will also be competing.
The Pirates have won two tournaments this spring — Ardmore and McAlester. The Lady Pirates have won the Pauls Valley and McAlester Tournaments. The Byng JV boys also won the Pauls Valley Tournament this spring.
