ADA — As part of Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, the Chickasaw Nation Departments of Family Advocacy and Youth Services are sponsoring a ribbon tying project throughout the city of Ada.

On trees located on traffic medians, volunteers will tie blue ribbons to remind citizens that child abuse prevention is everyone’s duty.

According to the National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect, almost four children die per day in the United States as a result of child abuse and/or neglect. A 2005 report from the Child Welfare League of America stated that 13,721 children were abused or neglected in the state of Oklahoma, a rate of 15.7 per 1,000 children.

The Chickasaw Nation hopes to raise awareness of child abuse prevention with the blue ribbon project. The ribbons will remain in Ada throughout the month of April.
