Oklahoma Beef Council, Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) and supporting sponsors, Cruises, Inc. and the RedHawks, are cooking up donor incentives and fun as they prepare to “Beef-up the Blood Supply” for Memorial Day. OBI will hold its Annual Beef Council Cookout Friday, May 26, at the East Central Oklahoma Blood Institute between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Donors can enter to win the grand prize bonanza, a brimming-over beef basket, to be given away at each OBI blood center. Each donor will receive an all-beef hot dog with trimmings, chips and a soft drink, as well as FREE health checks including readings on body temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, cholesterol and iron levels. Courtesy of the RedHawks, donors will also receive a voucher for two tickets to their June 5 baseball game.

Every donor will receive a FREE “Beef-up the Blood Supply” T-shirt. Additionally, all OBI T-shirt fans are encouraged to stop by and “Beef-up” their OBI T-shirt collections. A wide variety of OBI vintage T-shirts will be on sale at many OBI blood center locations all day for just $3 each.

Finally, beginning at the Beef Council Cookout May 26 and through July 3, donors can enter to win a 7-night-for-two Western Caribbean cruise abroad the Norwegian Sun that sails from New Orleans to the ports of Costa Maya, Belize and Cozumel, courtesy of Cruises, Inc.

The Memorial Day weekend annually signals the potential for difficult days ahead for the state’s blood supply. The weather is nice, people go on vacation and school is out. Traditionally, blood donations go down and blood usage goes up during the summer months. Last year, in addition to blood products already on hospital shelves, distribution to hospitals served by OBI during the Memorial Day weekend was well over 1,200 units of blood products.

“We are very appreciative of the Oklahoma Beef Council for their annual partnership and generous support for OBI and for supporting sponsors, Dave Proudfit of Cruises, Inc. and the RedHawks,” says Ronald O. Gilcher, M.D., FACP, President, CEO and Medical Director for OBI. “Their contributions to this event are an effective and fun way to remind blood donors of the need to continue to donate during the summer and to help OBI make sure the blood supply remains adequate for daily patient needs and emergencies.”
