Area retailers are gearing up for what they expect to be a big sales day Saturday with Ada’s once a year Sidewalk Sale. Diane Criswell, owner of Gem Jewelers, said it’s the longest running sales event in Pontotoc County.

“It’s the only retail promotion that’s been running continuously for the last 50 years,” Criswell said. Criswell also heads up this year’s Ada Area Chamber of Commerce retail committee, planners of the yearly clearance sale.

She said it started many years ago as only a Main Street event but today includes much more than just the downtown area. “It encompasses all of Ada, including North Hills Centre, Arlington Center, and Mississippi Street. The chamber’s retail committee expanded it to include all retail stores,” she said.

Criswell said the Sidewalk Sale is geared toward end of the season clearance merchandise with items selling for as much as 75 percent off regular retail price.

Gunar Matheny, Brown Shoe Fit store manager and retail committee member, said opening the sale up to all retailers has made it into a much bigger sales day. “About six or seven years ago it became a citywide event,” Matheny said. “Since then it’s been a tremendous success.”

Maurisa Nelson, The Ada News advertising director, said a special supplement will be included in Wednesday’s newspaper telling readers what local stores will have on display and what time they will be opening Saturday.

“Some retail store managers and owners have told us they will open as early as 7 a.m.,” Nelson said. They’ve been planning this for weeks and will be ready to go Saturday to offer great discounts on merchandise. Fifty stores participated last year and we’re expecting as many and maybe more to do so again this Saturday.”
