ADA — Deidre Canida, Ada, has been named winner of the 2006 Eleanor Wight Memorial Scholarship by the Ada Arts Council.

Rudy Lupinski, chairman of the Education Committee of the Ada Art Council, awarded Canida a $500 scholarship during the Vanoss High School Awards Banquet on May 16.

Canida is the daughter of Bob and Cathy Canida and plans to attend East Central University majoring in counseling. Canida is a graduate of Vanoss High School and has received numerous awards and honors in art throughout her high school career. Some of the many art awards she has received include Best of Show in the Seminole Jr. College Art Show, first place in the Languages of the World Poster Contest, first place at the Congressional Art Competition and at the Oklahoma Heritage Art Contest. Through her artwork, Canida has had the opportunity to meet Governor Brad Henry and won a trip to Washington D.C.

The Eleanor Wight Memorial Scholarship is given to a graduating high school senior who has been active in the arts and is planning to continue that tradition. It honors the late Eleanor Wight, a long-time sponsor of the arts and humanities in Ada and a former member of the Ada Arts and Humanities Council board of directors. The council’s logo is her design.
