The benefits of smart grid technology are coming to Ada later this month as OG&E installs about 12,000 smart meters on area homes and businesses.
OG&E and contracted personnel will take a few weeks to perform the upgrades and will be driving vehicles and wearing clothing that clearly identifies they are part of the installation effort.
OG&E officials said a letter with details about the effort was mailed to all its customers in Ada last week. Most residential customers will experience a brief power outage, which could cause digital displays on appliances to blink, during the change out. Many businesses will not see an outage because of the type of meter that serves a higher power load at those premises.
“We are in a partnership with our customers to use energy more wisely,” said Ken Grant, Managing Director Smart Grid. “The smart grid technology platform will help us do that.”
In addition to the smart meters, other smart grid equipment is being installed on the OG&E electric system to produce operational savings and help increase power delivery reliability.
“Smart meters aren’t any different from existing meters except for a component that communicates customer electricity data to OG&E through a secure, wireless communications network,” said Grant. “That technology supports remote meter reading each month, as well as remote connection and disconnection of service, providing faster service for our customers without having to roll a truck.”
According to Grant, another benefit in 2012 will be improved power restoration efforts, especially during widespread outages like the ice storm that hit Ada, along with several other communities in the southern part of the state, in 2010.
OG&E is also introducing 'myOGEpower,' a new personalized energy information website for smart meter customers. A few days after a smart meter is installed, Ada customers can sign up for access to see their electricity use and cost information online to help them better understand their power and manage their bills.
Customers are encouraged to sign up for the 'myOGEpower' online service at www.oge.com/myogepower. A special call center also is available to help with enrollments at 855-291-6304 between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays.
