A man accused of shooting two young girls to death in 2008 pleaded not guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder in the July 2011 death of his girlfriend.

Kevin Sweat, 26, entered the plea three months after an Okfuskee County judge ordered him to stand trial for the slaying of 23-year-old Ashley Taylor. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the case.

Investigators testified at a preliminary hearing in May that “severely fragmented” human bones recovered from a pile of burned debris next to Sweat’s father’s house near Weleetka were consistent with Taylor’s but not an exact match.
