An alligator that had been spotted near Watts has been killed by an Oklahoma game warden near a popular swimming and fishing area.

Jared Cramer says he was able to find and shoot the reptile Sunday in an oxbow lake about 200 yards from the swimming and fishing area on Ballard Creek, which feeds into the Illinois River.

Cramer says the 5-foot 3-inch long alligator sank and he was unable to retrieve it until Monday when the carcass was found by residents.

State Department of Wildlife Conservation officials are trying to determine how the alligator got to the area.

The reptiles are common along the Red River in far southeastern Oklahoma — about 175 miles south of Watts.

Cramer says the reptile may have been a pet that was released.
