Unlike many Catholics, Linda Schaefer was not shocked to learn that Pope Benedict XVI is retiring at the end of this month.
The East Central University instructor and her son saw the pope in December in Rome where they were waiting to attend Benedict’s Christmas Eve Mass.
Schaefer had made reservations for the holiday Mass, but she did not arrive in time to pick up her tickets. However, she was able to obtain other tickets for the event.
Schaefer and her son stood in line for 3 1/2 hours for the Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, and Schaefer saw Benedict enter the church and walk up the aisle to the altar. As the pope walked, Schaefer noted that he appeared fragile.
