Norman — Ex-Sooner named to USA Softball


NORMAN (AP) — Former University of Oklahoma outfielder Destinee Martinez has been selected to play for USA Softball's Women's National Team for a second consecutive year.

Martinez recently completed her eligibility at OU and is one of 17 players named to the 2014 team following workouts and a series of exhibition games.

The team will play an exhibition game in Morgantown, West Virginia, next month before traveling to Irvine, California, for the General Tire World Cup of Softball July 7-13.

The team will also play in the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, July 15-21 and Italian Softball Week in Azzano, Italy, Aug. 6-10 before playing in the International Softball Federation Women's World Championships, Aug. 15-24, in the Netherlands.

OU's Neuse competes for spot on Team USA


NORMAN (AP) — University of Oklahoma infielder and pitcher Sheldon Neuse is competing for a spot on the Team USA Collegiate National Team.

Neuse is one of nearly 30 players taking part in training camp and games before the final roster of 24 players is selected. Neuse has played third base and designated hitter in two games thus far and also pitched one inning to earn a save.

Neuse was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year after hitting .304 with seven home runs and 47 RBI. As a pitcher he made nine appearances with one save, a 1-0 record and a 2.25 ERA.

The Team USA Collegiate National Team is coached bu University of Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn.
