ECU women surge past archrival Southeastern

Durant —

In a game that had a much different score than the meeting between the East Central University and Southeastern Oklahoma State women’s basketball teams earlier this season, the Lady Tigers claimed a 69-62 Great American Conference win over the Savage Storm Thursday in Bloomer Sullivan Arena.

The Lady Tigers (18-7, 13-6 GAC) were led by Durant native senior Regan Browne. Browne tallied a new season-best 19 points and added two rebounds, five triples and an assist. Junior Alycea Price was also strong for ECU, garnering her third double-double of the year, on 12 points and a career-best 14 rebounds.

The first half started a little slow, with neither team scoring until 3:30 had run off the clock. The Savage Storm (10-15, 8-11 GAC) were the first to score when they hit a three with 17:26 on the clock. The Lady Tigers quickly followed with a triple of their own to start a 10-0 run over the next three minutes. Southeastern countered with a 7-2 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead to two (12-10).

That lead was quickly increased to 15; with a 13-0 ECU run until 8:25 remained in the first half. The teams traded shots over the next four minutes before another 7-0 run by the Lady Tigers pushed the lead out to 34-15. The Savage Storm then pushed over the final four minutes of the half, going on a 12-5 run to head into the locker room with ECU leading 39-27.

Southeastern opened the second half just as they ended the first, going on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to seven (39-32). After the Lady Tigers earned their first points of the half the teams traded points and scoreless streaks for the next six minutes.

ECU kept the lead between eight and 12 points during the span before the Savage Storm made a come-back attempt.

Southeastern used an 11-0 run over a three-minute span to tie the game at 52, with 9:15 left on the clock. However, sophomore Dilan Webster hit one of her three shots for the game to give the Lady Tigers the edge again. The shot helped spark ECU and the team then used two 4-0 runs to take a 62-56 lead with 2:15 left to play. The Lady Tigers kept fighting and held the Savage Storm to four points over the final minutes of the game, while scoring seven of their own for the 69-62 win.
