ECU soccer team falls to No. 13 Central Missouri

The East Central University soccer team dropped a 9-1 decision to No. 13 Central Missouri in the final non-conference match of the 2013 season Sunday in Warrensburg, Missouri.

The Lady Tigers’ (1-8) lone goal came from sophomore Kelsey Pickrell at 69:01 in the second half. Pickrell sent in a shot from the top of the box after a failed clearing attempt by the Jennies (7-1-2).

However, ECU’s goal came after Central Missouri had already tallied eight goals during the opening period.

The Lady Tigers played all three goaltenders during the game. Freshman Lexi Hurley started the game and red-shirt freshman Taylor Lowe went in at the start of the second half. Lowe played 33 minutes and stopped two shots.

Freshman Breeana Jewell played the final 12 minutes.

Despite the goal differential, ECU tallied nine shots on goals, while the Jennies earned 11. The Lady Tigers and UCM were also close in corner kicks at 4-5.

The Lady Tigers will return home for their final two regular-scheduled home matches of the 2013 season. ECU will first host Harding, Friday, Oct. 11 at 4 p.m. The Lady Tigers will then host Ouachita Baptist, Sunday, Oct. 13 for Senior Day at Lady Tiger Field, with the match starting a 1 p.m.

Men’s Cross Country finishes

13th at Chile Pepper Festival

FAYETEVILLE, ARK. —The East Central University men’s cross country team finished 13th, out of 21 college division teams, at the 2013 Chile Pepper Festival hosted by Arkansas.

The Tigers were the second team from the Great American Conference in the standings, with only Harding finishing above ECU in sixth. Southern Arkansas finished 14th and Southern Nazarene was 19th.

“It was the worst weather for a cross country race today,” said head coach Steve Sawyer. “We weren’t able to compete at our best level because of the weather. The men’s team needs to do a little bit better and I think we will do well heading into the last meet before the conference championship.”

As senior Walker Whitworth was bombing in the final five 3-point shots of his remarkable Ada High career, he was resetting the school’s triples record at 151. Across the way at the A-Town Barber Shop, barber Erick Gray did not even know he owned the record of 146, much less that someone was breaking it.
