Ardmore — The Byng High Schools boys tennis team successfully opened the 2014 spring season with an Ardmore Tournament championship on Tuesday.

The Pirates claimed titles at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and picked up another title at No. 1 doubles.

Byng scored 34 points, followed by second-place Durant at 28 and third-place Ardmore at 21.

Byng’s Caleb Shaw earned a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Durant’s Jordan Michael for the No. 1 singles crown, and the Pirates’ Dylan West posted a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Durant’s Garrett Reddout for the No. 2 singles title.

At No. 1 doubles, the Byng combination of Kai Jorgensen and Neil Jorgensen took first with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Seminole’s Hunter and Mosley.

Paul Snyder and Montana Sellers, Byng’s No. 2 doubles team, settled for second place after failing in three sets in the finals.

“Overall, it was good for a first day. We’re doing some different things, trying to find a lineup. Our kids played hard. It was close to a (championship) sweep,” said Byng head coach Alan Simpson. “That No. 2 doubles match could’ve easily gone our way after going three sets.”

Byng girls place third

The Lady Pirates’ No. 2 Doubles team of Andrea Burnsworth and Amanda Daniels earned a championship Tuesday in the Ardmore Tournament.

Burnsworth and Daniels topped Duncan’s Cassidy and Matthews in three sets, 6-0, 6-7, 6-2.

Byng’s No. 1 doubles team of Kaitlyn Atkeson and Lanie McGaha was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over the Pauls Valley combination of Carnell and Briscoe in a third-place match.

The Lady Pirates’ Kalina Popova settled for second place at No. 2 singles, and Hannah Fortner finished fourth at No. 1 singles.

Duncan was first with a score of 31, followed by Durant at 29 and Byng at 27.

The Byng girls and junior varsity boys will play in the Pauls Valley Tournament on Friday. The next competition for the Byng varsity boys will be March 24 at the McAlester Tournament.
