Lady Tigers split two games at softball tournament

Ada —

The East Central University softball team went 1-1 in the final two games of the Midwestern State Tournament. The Lady Tigers (10-4) first fell 7-11 to Midwestern State and then earned an 11-3 win in five innings over Texas A&M International.

ECU tallied 27 hits, including six home runs for the day and allowed 17 hits. The Lady Tigers were led by freshman Jordynn VanPelt, who garnered a .714 batting average for the day on five hits, including two doubles and a home run.

Sophomore Brianna Nunley earned the win in the circle, with a complete game against the Dustdevils.  Nunley finished the day with an ERA of 4.20 and six strike outs. Senior Ali Manship suffered the loss in the opening game of the day in two innings of work. Sophomore Lacey Paulk finished the game against Midwestern, striking out four batters.

“We need to work on being more consistent on defense,” said head coach Destini Anderson. “Not making our routine plays hurt us in both losses this weekend. We did hit the ball well and our pitchers continue to improve.”

ECU will return home to play the first games at Lady Tiger Field and the first Great American Conference games of the 2013 season, Feb. 22-23 when they host Southeastern Oklahoma State. Each day will feature a double-header, with games starting at 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22 and 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23.
