Byng tennis team grabs pair of victories Tuesday

Ardmore —  

ARDMORE — The Byng High School boys and girls tennis teams each earned two dual victories Tuesday in a three-way event with host Ardmore and Pauls Valley.

The Byng boys rolled to identical 4-0 decisions over Ardmore and Pauls Valley, while the Byng girls claimed 3-1 decisions in both duals.

In boys play, Byng’s Neil Jorgenson, at No. 1 singles, and Caleb Shaw, at No. 2 singles, rolled to two straight-set wins on the day. The No. 1 doubles team of Caleb McGaha and Dylan West and No. 2 doubles combination of Kai Jorgenson and Paul Snyder also picked up a pair of straight-set wins each.

For the Byng girls, Hannah Fortner, at No. 1 singles, and Kalina Popoba, at No. 2 singles, were each straight-set winners in both of their matches. Byng’s Kaitlyn Atkeson and Lanie McGaha, at No. 2 doubles, claimed a pair of victories.

The Byng boys headed to the McAlester Tournament today. The Byng girls and the JV boys’ team will participate in the Clinton Tournament on Friday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

On Saturday, the Byng varsity boys squad will join Ada High School and six other teams for the Tournament of Champions at Heritage Hall High School. The tournament features teams which either won a state championship or finished runner-up last year.

    The East Central University softball team clinched a spot in the 2014 Great American Conference Tournament with a sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday in Weatherford. The Lady Tigers (25-20, 17-15 GAC) first defeated the Bulldogs (11-33, 7-25 GAC) 9-7 and then 9-0 in five innings in the second day of the series.
