Oklahoma City —
Justin Powell fired an 8-under-par, career-best 64 on Tuesday and Wyatt Robson recorded a 3-under 69 as the Ada Cougars shot 4-under as a team for the day and captured a Class 4A State Golf Championship at the par-72 Lake Hefner North Golf Course.
Ada, which was tied with Heritage Hall after Monday’s first two rounds at 584, finished six strokes better on Tuesday to end up with an 868, while Heritage Hall finished at 874.
“We got off to a really great start (on Tuesday) and Justin got on a roll,” said his father and Ada head coach Robbie Powell. “That was probably as good of a high school round that you could have.”
Justin Powell, who finished at 8-under for the tournament after recording two even rounds of 72 on Monday, notched three eagles, three birdies and only one bogey in Tuesday’s final round in finishing third overall individually with a three-round total of 208. Powell had notched a 66 during a practice round before, but saved his best golf for last.
Robson posted a nifty round of his own on Tuesday with a 3-under 69. That came after posting scores of 72 and 70 on Monday to go 5-under for the event. Robson birdied four of the first seven holes on Tuesday, overcame a double-bogey and bogey and birdied the last two holes of the round in finishing in seventh place overall at 211.
