Bolstered by a championship at No. 2 singles and a runner-up finish at No. 2 doubles, the Byng High School boys’ tennis team took second place in the 16-team Shawnee Invitational on Saturday.
Heritage Hall captured the team title with a score of 59, followed by Byng at 53, Edmond Memorial at 42 and McAlester at 41.
Byng’s Caleb Shaw claimed the crown at No. 2 Singles with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-set decision over Edmond Memorial’s Jake Plant.
At No. 2 Doubles, the Pirates’ Kai Jorgenson and Paul Snyder fell to the team from Heritage Hall in the finals by a 6-4, 6-2 score.
Byng’s Neil Jorgenson dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision in his final match to McAlester’s Chance Sistrunk to settle for fourth place at No. 1 Singles and the Pirates’ No. 1 Doubles combination of Caleb McGaha and Dylan West earned fifth place after earning a hard-fought, three-set win over the team from Henryetta in their final match.
“It was a good showing against good competition,” said Byng head coach Alan Simpson.
The next action for the Byng boys will be regional competition in Oklahoma City on Monday, May 6.
