Latta basketball squads sweep Vanoss

Vanoss — The Class 2A top-ranked Latta Panthers forced 26 turnovers and had a commanding 30-15 rebounding advantage in rolling to a 59-17 victory over the host Vanoss Wolves on Tuesday night.

Junior guard Treston Tully tossed in a game-high 12 points, pulled down six rebounds and registered five steals as Latta limited Vanoss to single-digit scoring in each quarter.

Joining Tully in double figures was senior guard Kade Hayes with 10, including a pair of 3-point jumpers. Junior forward Derek Epperly finished with nine points and senior center Ryan Stockton ended up with eight.

Though Brogan Cantrell finished with just a single point, he did hand out a game-high five assists to help fuel the offense.

“We got to play a lot of kids and got a lot into the game,” said Latta Head Coach Donnie Husband. “I don’t think we played very well in the first half. We played a little too fast, and forced things. But we battled and made some shots in the third quarter.”

The Panthers had five 3-pointers on the night as Brady Johnson, Carter Kessinger and Tanner Smith nailed one apiece. Johnson and Kessinger ended up with five points each as Latta improved to 3-0 on the season.

Trae McGinnis topped Vanoss with six points and Blake Cooper tacked on five, including the team’s only trey.

The Panthers had a 9-1 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 23-6 halftime advantage. Latta then outscored the Wolves, 24-7, in the third as Latta led, 47-13, going into the fourth.
