Byng boys claim tennis tourney title; ladies finish in second place

Oklahoma City —

After coming close in two earlier season tournaments, the Byng High School boys tennis team finally picked up a championship Tuesday by winning the eight-team Lawton MacArthur Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

Byng scored 31 points on its way to the title, edging out second-place Owasso (30). Elk City (26) and Altus (12) followed in the standings.

Neil Jorgenson (No. 1 singles), Caleb Shaw (No. 2 singles) and Andrew Johnson-Clay Patterson (No. 3 doubles) each earned first-place efforts for the Pirates. Byng’s No. 1 doubles team of Dylan West and Caleb McGaha took second, and the Pirates’ No. 3 doubles combination of Kai Jorgenson and Paul Snyder finished third.

“It was good to win a tournament against a good 6A club like Owasso. In two previous tournaments, we lost by two points (at McAlester) and one point to Ada (at Ardmore),” said Byng head coach Alan Simpson. “Neil played the match of his life against a Swedish exchange student.”
