The preliminary competitions for the 2013 Ada News All-Star Classic 3-point Shoot Out and Slam Dunk contests were literally seconds from coming to an end when Ada High sophomore Cory Kilby rushed to the scorer’s table inside Stonewall’s Murphy-Roberts Gymnasium and asked if it was too late for him to enter the fray.
While the 3-point Shoot Out preliminaries had long been completed, the last of six dunk combatants had just attempted his slam. So Kilby, who hurried to Stonewall right after the completion of Wednesday’s spring football practice that finished just after the 4 p.m. start time for the All-Star Classic preliminaries, changed into his basketball shoes and effortlessly threw down a two-handed slam to qualify for the finals.
Kilby then went on to handily defeat Moss big man Tye Rambo and athletic Stratford forward Trey Helm to win the All-Star Classic Slam Dunk contest for the second straight year.
In the girls 3-point Shoot Out, freshman Allison Sells out-dueled a pair of varsity veterans — Ada senior Kyndel Carter and Vanoss junior Kalli Mowdy — to win that event. Cole Young of Allen edged Cody Robinson of Moss in a lackluster boys 3-point Shoot Out championship round.
