Ada girls win 5A regional title

Margo Martin and Haley Dean claimed singles championships as the Ada High School girls’ tennis squad rolled to a Class 5A regional title on Monday.

Martin earned the No. 1 Singles crown with an easy straight-set 6-0, 6-0 victory over McAlester’s Krystal Hixson, while Dean was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over McAlester’s Precious Crawford at No. 2 Singles.

Ada posted a team score of 31, edging out second-place and host Bixby (30). McAlester finished third with a 25.

At No. 1 Doubles, the Lady Cougar team of Natalie Keel and Meneé Thomsen earned a 7-5, 6-1 win over the team of Loretta Medina and Jennifer Amy from McAlester for third place.

Ada’s No. 2 Doubles combination of Tori Ross and Mikala Whelchel fell in their championship match to Bixby.

The Lady Cougars will compete in the Class 5A State Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

Byng Lady Pirates tie for second

at 4A Regional Tournament

TULSA – The Byng High School girls tennis team, sparked by a championship finish from No. 2 Singles entrant Kalina Popova, finished in a tie for second place at the Class 4A Regional Tournament on Monday at LaFortune Park.

Metro Christian captured the team title with a score of 45, while Byng and Oklahoma Bible Academy tied for second at 39. Seminole was fourth at 33. There were 12 schools involved in the regional.

Popova upped her season record to 23-14 with a decisive straight-set victory over Oklahoma Bible Academy’s Hannah Jackson, 6-1, 6-3.

Byng also posted a second-place finish at No. 2 Doubles by Kaitlyn Atkeson and Lanie McGaha. The pair fell to the team of Olivia Chorvat and Lauren Hjelm from Metro Christian in the finals by scores of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. McGaha and Atkeson have combined for an impressive 32-4 record so far this season.

At No. 1 Doubles, the Lady Pirates’ combination of Andrea Burnsworth and Sam Jones earned a hard-fought 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 win over the team from Seminole for third place. Burnsworth and Jones now have a 21-14 record this year.

In No. 1 Singles play, Byng’s Hannah Fortner settled for fourth place after dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision in the third-place match to Seminole’s Danielle Wadkins. Fortner is 18-20 on the season.

The Lady Pirates will play in the Class 4A State tournament Friday and Saturday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
