Ada boys sink Shawnee

Shawnee —

Execution down the stretch proved to be big for the Ada Cougars as they made enough plays to secure a 55-51 victory over the host Shawnee Wolves Tuesday night in boys high school basketball action.

Ada was clinging to a slim 42-41 lead when 6-foot, 6-inch sophomore forward Cory Kilby nailed back-to-back short-range jumpers, the latter of which came with 5:01 remaining, as the Cougars established a five-point advantage.

“Cory had an outstanding game…a good offensive game. We needed that cushion that he gave us,” said Ada head coach Ron Anderson.

From there, the Cougars maintained a lead the rest of the way as 6-7 junior forward David Forbes and Kilby had consecutive buckets to push the Ada advantage to 50-44 with 2:04 to go.

The Cougars, who were only 8-of-15 from the free-throw line for the game, did knock them down when they needed to most as they were 5-of-7 in the fourth quarter.

Outside of 15 turnovers, Ada showed signs of solid execution as it had 19 assists on its 22 total baskets.

Kilby, behind 9-of-16 shooting from the floor, ended up with 20 points while pulling down eight rebounds and blocking two shots. John Stout, a 6-1 senior forward, followed with 15 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field for the winners as he connected on 7-of-8 free shots, including 5-of-6 in the final quarter, to go with a game-high five assists.
