Cougars dominate Class 4A Regional

Tulsa —

The Ada High School boys’ tennis team claimed three championships and one runner-up finish to run away with the team title at the Class 4A Regional Tournament on Monday at LaFortune Park in Tulsa.

Ada posted a team score of 46 in dominating the 12-team event while runner-up Okmulgee had 37.

Jamie Earle claimed a No. 2 Singles crown for the Cougars while the doubles’ teams of Josh Ellis and Andrew Leach, at the No. 1 spot, and Charlie Hansen and Zack Whelchel, at No. 2, also picked up regional titles.  John Stout finished second at No. 1 Singles for Ada.

Earle earned the No. 2 Singles title with an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Oklahoma Bible Academy’s Logan Jantz in the finals. Earle posted a perfect 3-0 record for the tournament.

At No. 1 Doubles, Ellis and Leach combined for a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the duo from Seminole while Hansen and Whelchel were 6-1, 6-0 winners over the pair from Oologah.

Ellis and Leach teamed up for a 3-0 record in the regional while Hansen and Whelchel ended up with a 2-0 mark for the event.

At No. 1 singles, Okmulgee’s Russell Gehring topped Stout in three sets, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Stout finished with a 2-1 record in the regional.

“We handled business, played well and are looking forward to state,” said Ada head coach Skip Griese.

The state tournament is set for Friday and Saturday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

    Gabe Simons jump-started the Ada offense with his three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the second before the Cougars pushed across six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, sending Sulphur packing 9-1 Thursday evening at Cougar Field.

    As senior Walker Whitworth was bombing in the final five 3-point shots of his remarkable Ada High career, he was resetting the school’s triples record at 151. Across the way at the A-Town Barber Shop, barber Erick Gray did not even know he owned the record of 146, much less that someone was breaking it.
