AJH squad captures championship

The Ada High School wrestling team finished eighth out of 16 teams while the Ada Junior High squad was crowned champion at the Mid-Western Conference Tournament this past weekend.

In the high school division, Ada’s Danny Lamb claimed the title at 182 pounds and was also voted by all coaches as the outstanding wrestler of the tournament in posting a perfect 4-0 record for the event.

Teammate Dalton Thompson took second at 195 pounds as he registered a 3-1 record.

Three other Cougars – Hunter Bedsole (170 pounds), Colton Lancaster (182) and Marwin Dickerson (heavyweight) – finished fifth.

At the junior high level, Ada scored a 227 for first place, followed by Sulphur at 197.5, Madill at 179, McLoud at 161 and Harrah at 153. Sixteen junior high teams competed in the event.

There were two champions for Ada as Jonathan Fuller placed first at 98 pounds and Eli Paul topped the field at 150. Each was a perfect 4-0.

Earning second-place honors for Ada were: Carter Patterson (80 pounds), Justin Miller (120), Damion Hardcaste (140), Levi Grimes (162) and Jonathan Cook (heavyweight).

Cook had a 4-1 record in the tournament while Patterson, Miller, Grimes and Hardcastle were each 3-1.

Kyler Reed ended up third at 89 pounds, while Tyson Gould (126 pounds) and Gareth Baker (132) were each sixth.

The Ada High team wrestles in a dual at Madill on Tuesday. The Cougars will then compete in the Bishop Kelley Tournament in Tulsa on Friday and Saturday.

    Gabe Simons jump-started the Ada offense with his three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the second before the Cougars pushed across six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, sending Sulphur packing 9-1 Thursday evening at Cougar Field.

Across the way at the A-Town Barber Shop, barber Erick Gray did not even know he owned the record of 146, much less that someone was breaking it.

    The East Central University softball team clinched a spot in the 2014 Great American Conference Tournament with a sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday in Weatherford. The Lady Tigers (25-20, 17-15 GAC) first defeated the Bulldogs (11-33, 7-25 GAC) 9-7 and then 9-0 in five innings in the second day of the series.
