ECU WOMEN’S NOTEBOOK

The Game

The East Central University women’s basketball team will be hitting the court against its arch rival Southeastern Oklahoma State, Thursday, Jan. 24 after having a week off. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Kerr Activities Center and is the annual Blackout Game.

Scouting Southeastern

The Savage Storm are 6-9 overall and 4-5 in the Great American Conference after earning a 77-67 win over Southern Nazarene in their last outing.

Southeastern has three players that are averaging double-digit point totals and a fourth that is netting 9.4 points per game this season. All four players have taken over 100 shot attempts, with the next highest total on the team being 64.

Bailey Welch has an 11.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game average on the season, while also adding 56 assists. Ronay English averages 10.8 points and 2.9 rebounds, while Haley Schaefer is contributing 10.2 points and 6.1 boards per game.

The Savage Storm have strong (.404) overall and (.312) three-point shooting percentages, but still have a -7.3 points margin. Their opponents are hitting .410 of their shots and .307 of the triples. Part of the reason for the difference is that Southeastern has taken 150 fewer shots on the season.

The Lady Tigers will have to watch out for a second-half surge from the Savage Storm. Southeastern has scored 100 more points in the second stanza and allowed 30 fewer by the opposition. However, they are being out-scored by 121 points in the first half.

Against the Savage Storm

Last year the teams each earned a win on their home courts and kept the games very close. The tight outcomes showed in the box score, where the teams were even in most categories. The key difference was in three-point shooting. The Lady Tigers shot .186 (8-of-43) from beyond the arc, while the Savage Storm was 19-of-72 (.264).

The key returners for ECU were Kodi Morrison, Ashley Robison and Regan Browne. All three averaged nine points per game, with Morrison adding 5.0 rebounds and Robison contributing 7.5 boards per game.

The top returners for Southeastern are Ronay English and Bailey Welch, who each tallied 10 points per game.

The Series

The Lady Tigers and the Savage Storm have played each other every season since the 1982-83 campaign. Southeastern currently holds a 34-28 advantage in the series, with ECU having one the last meeting.

ECU MEN’S NOTEBOOK

The Game

The East Central University men’s basketball team will continue a rich battle with Southeastern Oklahoma State, when the Savage Storm comes to the Kerr Activities Center, Thursday, Jan. 24 for a 7:30 p.m. contest. Besides being a game between arch rivals it is also the annual Blackout Game at ECU.

Scouting Southeastern

Southeastern is 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the Great American Conference this season after winning their last game at home, 82-78, against Southern Nazarene.

The Savage Storm has three players that are averaging double-digit point totals and account for 53 percent of the team’s rebounding. All three have grabbed over 100 rebounds, with the next highest total on the team being 55.

Chris Roussell leads the team with 16.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while shooting .518 from the field and .477 from three-point range. Southeastern has a +6.0 scoring and +6.1 rebounding margin on the season. They are shooting .472 from the field and allowing a .413 mark, while also hitting .397 of their triples. The Savage Storm has advantages in almost all of the statistical categories, except ball control. Southeastern is recording two more turnovers per game and almost two fewer steals per game.

Against the Savage Storm

Last year ECU fell to Southeastern in both series meetings, but the games were kept close. That was reflected in the boxscore, with the biggest difference being a +8.5 rebounding advantage for the Tigers.

The top returners from a season ago for Southeastern are Chirs Roussell and Steven Kohli. Roussell garnered 13 points per game, while Kohli added 11 points and six rebounds per game.

The Series

The all-time series with the Savage Storm is the second longest in school history, with the teams not facing each other in just four seasons since 1927-28. Those four years include two (1942-43 and 1943-44) when ECU did not field a team during World War II. The series is one of the best rivalries in the conference, with the difference in the 163 meetings being one game. Southeastern currently holds an 82-81 lead in the series after winning the last two meetings.
