Roff pounds Preston, 20-0

Oklahoma City — Last spring, the Roff Tigers had to endure a month-long wait between a state tournament semifinal game and a championship contest.

So it was no sweat for the Tigers to sit through a one-hour rain delay before its first-round matchup with Preston Thursday afternoon at the 2014 Class A State Tournament held at Dolese Park’s Palmer Field.

The Pirates may have wished the game never got started as Roff got rolling early and never stopped in a convincing 20-0 win.

The top-ranked Tigers improved to 28-7 and will play the Sterling-Pioneer winner in a 4 p.m. semifinal contest today while unranked Preston bowed out at 14-10.

The Roff offense operated like a well-oiled machine, piling up a whopping 19 hits in the five-inning run rule.

“I felt like we had a pretty good approach up there today. I thought it was a sharp win,” said Roff head coach Ead Simon. “The guys seem to be in a good spot in their mind and they came and played well and took care of business.”

Due to the entire first round of the Class B State Tournament being delayed by the rains that soaked the Edmond Memorial ballpark, Saturday’s Class A title game is now scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

The Tigers certainly hope to be one of the two teams playing some morning baseball this weekend. If the Roff bats stay hot, the Tigers can likely make their Saturday reservations.

“I hope it’s a sign of our approach and how things are going to go,” Simon said of Roff’s production at the plate. “We know we’ll see better pitching and we’re going to have to be good and make good decisions pitch after pitch.”

Overshadowed by the 20-run rout was the strong outing by Roff starting pitcher Hunter Larsh, who tossed four shutout innings. Larsh worked around back-to-back singles to start the second inning and gave up just one other hit while striking out three with no walks to earn his sixth victory of the spring. C.J. Johnson allowed a harmless single in a scoreless inning of relief.
