Ada Cougars sweep past Pauls Valley in pair of wild 4A District games

Ada —    Walker Whitworth’s run-scoring single in the top of the seventh lifted Ada to a 9-8 victory and a Class 4A district championship on Thursday.

The victory came after the Cougars won another close one against Pauls Valley earlier in the day, 10-9, off Scott Johnson’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

“It was a little bit of a roller coaster. Give credit to Pauls Valley. They fought extremely hard,” said Ada head coach Elliott Alberson. “I was proud of the kids — the way they stayed after it and responded to adversity early in both games. It was a great test, and I feel good moving forward knowing we’ve been in those moments.”

Ada, now 22-7 on the year, advances to next week’s regional tournament.

Game 1

Ada 10, Pauls Valley 9

Micah Simmer hit a big two-run homer, while Scott Johnson went 4-for-5 from the plate with four runs batted in and scored twice as the Cougars rallied to beat the Panthers.

Ada trailed 9-7 heading into the bottom of the seventh, when Johnson had a leadoff single before Simmer launched his two-run blast to force the extra inning.

Also making a major contribution to the Cougars' 11-hit attack was Gabe Simons, who was 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.

Three other Ada players each went 1-for-3 as Whitworth went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Simmer was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and Garrett Beam went 1-for-3.

Whitworth, the Cougars’ third pitcher of the game, got the win as he worked the final three innings, allowing no hits and only two walks while striking out three in facing 12 batters.

Ada, which actually trailed 7-0, scored four runs in the third off a Johnson run-scoring single and a three-run double by Whitworth.

The Cougars then added three more scores in the fourth to tie it up at 7-all on a Jake Boone RBI single and a Johnson two-run single.

Pauls Valley regained the lead with a two-run sixth to make it 9-7.

Ada held an 11-7 advantage in total hits but was plagued by four errors.

Devin Baker finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs to pace Pauls Valley while Treston Williams finished 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Game 2

Ada 9, Pauls Valley 8

Reliever Dalton Wolf allowed one earned run off four hits with just one walk and nine strikeouts over six innings as the Cougars held on for another one-run win. He also walked three times and scored twice at the plate to help his own cause.

Gabe Simons sparked Ada’s 11-hit assault by going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Whitworth and Beam were each 2-for-3 and scored once, as Whitworth also knocked in a pair of runs.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first, when Wolf drew a leadoff walk and scored off Johnson’s triple. But the Panthers scored five runs in the bottom half of that frame.

Ada pulled within 5-2 in the third off Colton Blankenship’s run-scoring single.

It was 6-2 heading into the fourth when the Cougars pulled within 5-4 on Simmer’s two-run single and Whitworth’s sacrifice fly.

Ada forged a 6-all tie in the top of the fifth, when Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk.

However, once again, Pauls Valley scored twice in the bottom half of that inning for an 8-6 advantage.

The Cougars tied it up again in the sixth off a Simons two-run double.

Then in the seventh, Johnson reached first base on a one-out error, moved up to second on a groundout and scored off Whitworth’s RBI single for what proved to be the game winner.

Ada had an 11-9 edge in hits and stranded 10 runners, compared to Pauls Valley’s eight. The Cougars also committed four errors, and the Panthers ended up with two.

Williams led PV, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Matt Perry went 2-for-3 and scored twice.
