Norman — The Byng High School girls tennis team captured a team title while the Byng boys tied for first as the Lady Pirates and Pirates played in the Norman Tournament on Monday.
Byng’s girls scored a 31, followed by Norman North at 25, Muskogee at 24 and Norman at 23.
The Lady Pirates claimed two titles at No. 2 Singles and No. 2 Doubles.
Byng’s Kalina Popova registered a 2-0 record in the tournament, including a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Muskogee’s Abby Wayman in the finals.
At No. 2 Doubles, the Lady Pirates’ Andrea Burnsworth and Amanda Daniel combined for a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Norman’s Anthony and Cline. Burnsworth and Daniel went 2-0 for the tournament.
Byng’s Hannah Fortner settled for second place after a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Norman North’s Nina Jubrzemski at No. 1 Singles. Fortner was 1-1 on the day.
At No. 1 Doubles, the Lady Pirates’ Kaitlyn Atkeson and Sam Jones were 6-2, 6-4 winners over Norman North’s Cooper and Gross in the third-place match. Atkeson and Jones finished 1-1 in the event.
The next action for the Byng girls is Tuesday in the Harrah Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
Byng and Muskogee tied for first at 28, followed by Edmond Santa Fe at 26, Norman at 17 and Norman North at 15.
The Pirates’ only first-place finish came at No. 2 Doubles as Paul Snyder and Montana Sellers collaborated for a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Edmond Santa Fe’s Hsi and Pradhu. Snyder and Sellers ended up at 2-0 for the tournament.
Byng’s Dylan West, at No. 2 Singles, and Neil Jorgensen and Kai Jorgensen at No. 1 Doubles were forced to settle for second after falling in the finals.
Muskogee’s Ryan Pearce downed West, 6-2, 6-2, and Norman’s Gehring and Gillett topped the Jorgensens in a tiebreaker, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. West finished at 2-1 for the tournament as did the Jorgensen pair.
At No. 1 Singles, Crossing Christian’s Lucas Meacham downed Byng’s Caleb Shaw, 6-0, 6-4 for third place as Shaw ended up at 1-2 for the event.
