Area high school stars honing skills for Okie Baseball Academy Team

Ada —

Area high school baseball stars are honing their skills this summer by playing for the Okie Baseball Academy’s 18-and-under traveling team.

The team, under the direction of former Vanoss Head Baseball Coach Neb Brown, was in the process of playing in its third tournament this weekend and owned a 4-5 overall record, heading into a Saturday game against Sweetwater Baseball at Putnam City West High School.

“We’ve only been together for about four weeks and have only had a few practices because the kids have been busy,” said Brown. “We haven’t connected as team as far as chemistry, but overall they’ve done a good job.”

Members of the 14-player team include: right fielder Chat Henry and second baseman Chisum Henry from Tupelo; catcher Phillip Leon and third baseman/second baseman Jake Frazier from Asher; shortstop Marcus Sandy from Stonewall; pitcher Clayton Mulliniks from Vanoss; second baseman Jake Boone, center fielder/pitcher Walker Whitworth and first baseman/designated hitter Tim Simpson from Ada; and first baseman/outfielder Kiyaanii Bohan from Byng.

Also on the team are: catcher Barrett Newell and pitcher Devin Dixon from Lookeba-Sickles; left-handed pitcher J.T. Hankins from Tuttle; and first baseman/pitcher Hunter Hall from Glencoe.

“We have kids with a lot of talent, but we’re trying to figure out how to play together,” Brown said.

The Okie Academy Baseball team opened summer play a few weeks ago by going 2-1 in a tournament in Burkburnett, Texas. They defeated the Dallas Dodgers and Burkburnett Black Sox in that event.

They went 0-3 in their next tournament at the University of Central Oklahoma and have gone 2-1 in a tournament this weekend, heading into the Saturday contest with Sweetwater Baseball. The tournament began on Thursday at the University of Oklahoma. The Okie Baseball Academy squad beat the Oklahoma Angels and Oklahoma Bearcats in early action.
