Byng Pirate second baseman Braden "Whitey" Fortner is the poster boy for the Ada Cougars' demise at the Class 4A District Tournament Thursday at Stokes Field. Fortner's success at getting on base illustrates why Byng is advancing to this week's regional action, while the Cougars will be watching from the stands.
Fortner, a sophomore, stood steady in the batter's box and was hit by five pitches in the doubleheader after batting eight times in the two games. Fortner may not have exactly enjoyed reaching base that way, but it amplified problems faced by the Cougar pitching staff, who struggled throughout both contests to throw strikes.
No. 7 Byng rallied for a 7-3 win in the opener before cruising past the Cougars 4-1 to claim the district championship.
Ada ends its first season under new head coach Elliott Alberson at 15-16, while the Pirates advance with a 22-6 record.
