Two familiar foes will square off in a Class 2A boys’ area championship game on Friday in Anadarko as the 13th-ranked Konawa Tigers take on the fifth-ranked Latta Panthers for a state tournament berth at 8 p.m.
The two teams each head into the clash on a roll. Konawa, 20-7 on the season, is the winner of seven straight and 11 of the last 12 while Latta, 25-2, has won 14 straight. The Tigers’ only loss during that span was to the Panthers at Latta on Feb. 1.
Friday’s winner automatically lands a spot at state while the loser will have another chance on Saturday by playing in the area runner-up game.
The Panthers won both meetings with Konawa this season. The other was way back on Dec. 4 in Konawa, a 46-45 decision by Latta.
For Konawa head coach Gordon Garner, the Tigers’ recent path of success has simply come down to the team meshing together.
