East Central University fall sports roundup

WEATHERFORD — MEN'S BASKETBALL

WEATHERFORD — The East Central University men’s basketball team opened the 2013-14 season Friday at the SWOSU Classic, falling 72-62 to Angelo State at Rankin Fieldhouse.

The Tigers (0-1) were led by senior Henry Pwono, who garnered his first career double-double with a career-high 16 points and 11 rebounds. Pwono shot .500 (6-of-12) from the floor and added two blocks. Senior Colby Carr was also in double-digits in the point’s column for ECU, with 17.

“I give a lot of credit to Angelo State; they did a good job tonight,” said head coach Ja Havens. “We turned the ball over too much (23) and will need to make some changes on defense so we can continue to improve.”

The Tigers opened the game strong, earning an 11-4 advantage, with less than 16 minutes left in the first half. However, the Rams (1-0) scored the next seven points to force a tie at 11. ASU continued to push the momentum and used another 7-2 run to push the lead to five (18-13).

ECU kept fighting and tied the game at 27, with 3:45 left in the first half, but the Rams scored the final seven points of the stanza to take a 34-27 lead into the locker room.

The Tigers opened the second half with a 9-4 run to cut the disadvantage to three (38-35), but that was as close as ECU would get the rest of the game. ASU pushed the lead out to as many as 13 late in the game before earning the 10-point win.

ECU shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the floor and 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from beyond the arc, while the Rams had a strong 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the floor and just 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from three-point range. The Tigers did earn a strong advantage in the rebounding column (43-29).

Kenny Williams led the Angelo State charge with a game-high 28 points on 12-of-16 shooting from the field and also pulled down 10 rebounds.
