Sterling pitcher overpowers Roff

Edmond —

The fourth-ranked Roff Tigers couldn’t touch this.

Sterling ace Tucker White struck out 13 in a complete-game, no-hitter as the the fifth-ranked Tigers from the west edged Roff 1-0 in first-round pitcher’s duel at the Class A State Tournament Thursday afternoon at Edmond Santa Fe High School.

In a later game, No. 7 Rattan held off a Latta rally to slip by the Panthers 6-4. A complete wrapup of that contest will appear in Sunday’s edition of The Ada News.

Sterling 1, Roff 0

As good as White was for Sterling, Roff ace Dalton Reed was far from shabby.Reed struck out nine and scattered four hits in a fine seven-inning masterpiece of his own.

Sterling got its run in the top of the third wen Dillon Wright ripped a double to the wall in left-center and scored when White helped his own cause with a line drive single to left. White advanced to second on a throw to the plate, but three consecutive strikeouts by Reed got Roff out of that jam without further damage.

Sterling got a runner to second with one out in the second but couldn’t score and Chase Bridges reached on an error to lead off the third inning. Two groundouts moved that runner to third before another big strikeout kept Sterling off the scoreboard.

Sterling nine-hole hitter Caleb Break hit a one-out double in the fifth, but Reed retired the final eight batters he faced to finish the game.

“(Reed) wasn’t as good as I’ve seen him, but he probably threw good enough to win,” said Roff head coach Ead Simon from the RHS dugout after the game.

Roff didn’t have many scoring opportunities against White.

Hunter Larsh walked with one out in the bottom of the first and stole second but White used a pair of Ks to leave the only runner Roff would get in the game on base.
