Ada starting tailback likely out for season with knee injury

Ada —

At the end of Monday’s Week 2 practice, Ada High head coach Matt Weber called his seniors together at mid-field for some messages. “Take a knee,” he instructed. All complied. Except for tailback Chase Lott. He couldn’t. His right knee didn’t work anymore, especially in the metal leg-length brace that encased his leg.

The dreaded ‘initialese’ that surfaces quite frequently in football falls had struck the camp — MRI, ACL. The scant few options that come from a torn ACL were still being discussed, but the upshot of the situation is that the senior season for one of the gamest of Cougars as an underclassman was most likely over before it began.

As a valuable, versatile sophomore and junior, Lott played several position on offense and defense, whatever was needed. As a senior he was a solid as the starting tailback, the lone returner from 2012 with much yardage, 363 yards and a six-pack of touchdowns on 61 carries.

“I am so sorry for him. He will be a great loss for us. There are still decisions to be made, whether to try to rehab it or to cut on it and rehab that, maybe get him back for soccer,” Weber said. Lott was a mainstay for Tom Morrison’s soccer team.

The loss makes for an already thin crew in the backfield, probably the the thinnest in Weber’s six-year tenure.

Jeremiah Larry, newly cleared both athletically and academically for competition after a semester in Texas, probably moves up a notch from No. 2. Larry carried 16 times for 140 yards a year ago.

The Maroon/White scrimmage

Lott, noticeably limping during the delivery of the ADA’s Back media guide to advertisers on Friday and at the annual Media Day Saturday, was obvious in his absence when he did not participate in the Maroon/White intrasquad scrimmage that evening.
