Cougars cruise past Santa Fe South

Ada —      The Ada Cougars were efficient, dominant and took care of business during a 63-0 win over outmatched Santa Fe South Friday night at Norris Field.

The District 4A-2 game was more lopsided than the score might indicate.

Ada piled up 425 yards of total offense while limiting the Saint Bernards to 57. Ada running backs Shiloh Windsor  and Austin Feezel both topped the 100-yard mark. Windsor rushed for 104 yards on just six carries, and Feezel had 105 yards on nine totes.

Ada improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in district play, while Santa Fe South dipped to 1-5 and 0-3.

“I thought our kids approached the game with maturity. We played hard from the start and were sharp,” said Ada head coach Matt Weber. “That’s a credit to how our kids prepare. It was nice to get everyone on the roster in the game, and they all did some good things.”

Santa Fe South immediately got a sign of things to come when Scott Johnson impressively returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. The score was taken off the board due to a holding penalty, but the Saint Bernards got the message loud and clear.

Windsor covered the 57 yards to paydirt on Ada’s first possession with five runs, the longest a 27-yarder. He capped the drive with a 7-yard TD run that gave the Cougars a 7-0 lead with almost 10 minutes left in the first quarter.

Ada’s second scoring drive was similar to the first, with Feezel taking over the rushing duties. His 4-yard TD waltz was set up by a 23-yard catch by Garrett Beam, who punished a defender or two before being dragged down near the goal line. The Cougars led 14-0 heading into the second period.

Jeremiah Larry was the workhorse on the next Ada scoring drive that featured a 28-yard pass from quarterback Cory Kilby to Gabriel Simons. That set up a 12-yard TD keeper around the right size by Kilby that put Ada on top 21-0.

With 2:26 left before halftime, Windsor rushed through a gaping hole and made a 47-yard TD romp look far too easy.

The Cougars got one more possession that started at midfield, but Todd Penick — who finished a perfect 9-for-9 on PAT kicks — hit the left upright on a 35-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the second quarter, leaving Ada with its 28-0 lead.

Santa Fe South got the ball to start the third quarter and were forced to punt on fourth down and 23, thanks to a fumble and an eight-yard quarterback sack by Tim Simpson. Johnson scooped up the bouncing football and returned it around the left side for a 67-yard score. It was sweet redemption for the long return that was called back to start the game.

After a fumble recovery by Levi Grimes, wearing No. 1 as the Special Teams Player of the Week, Feezel easily scored on an 8-yard TD run for the Cougars’ second TD of the third quarter in the span of just under two minutes. With 6:14 to play in the period, Ada led 42-0.

The Ada touchdown feast continued as Feezel capped his night with a 39-yard scoring romp with a minute to play in the third.

Jake Martinez got in on the act with a 13-yard run early in the fourth quarter, and third-string quarterback Dillon Briggs finished the Ada scoring parade when his quarterback sneak turned into a 58-yard jaunt to paydirt with 4:13 to play.

Quinton Gregory stopped the final Santa Fe South drive with a fumble recovery.

“We know the toughest part of our schedule begins now. I’m proud our kids haven’t used injuries as an excuse,” Weber said. “They have taken the next man mentality. We are excited about the challenge as we move on in district play.”

The Cougars, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A, travel to Glenpool Thursday night for a fall break matchup. Glenpool dropped a 36-7 decision to No. 4 Douglas in Week 6.
