2001 state champs giving back to Ada baseball program

Ada — Ada High baseball coach Elliott Alberson was part of the 2001 Cougar team that captured the school’s last state championship.

Now other members of that team are giving back to Alberson and the baseball program.

Each year, it’s been a longstanding tradition for the Cougar baseball team to host a dinner and silent auction to raise funds for the program. This year’s event is a brisket dinner and auction scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday inside The Central Church of Christ Family Life Center.

Chad Robertson, one of Alberson’s former teammates and one of his best friends, said the 2001 champs have put together an impressive spring training trip as one of this year’s auction items.

“Coach Alberson is my best friend in the world, and he was also an unbelievable teammate to all of us during our time playing baseball together,” he said. “To show our continued support of coach Alberson as well as the Ada High Baseball program in general, the 2001 state championship team has collectively have donated a VIP Spring Training vacation to see the Cincinnati Reds in Phoenix.”

The vacation includes round-trip airfare for two, three nights stay in the Courtyard Mariott, tickets to a Reds spring training game and a VIP tour of the Reds spring training facility.

“In 2001 our team took a trip to Phoenix to play five games as well as go to a spring training game and tour the Mariners facility, so this trip sort of comes full circle for our group,” Robertson said.

Another big-ticket auction item made available by Robertson includes two tickets to watch the Oklahoma City Thunder battle the Utah Jazz on Sunday, March 30 at the Chesapeake Arena. The seats are located in section 115 and come with a parking pass.

“These are great seats that put you between midcourt and the visitor bench only five rows off the floor,” Robertson said.

Robertson said he expects big things from Alberson and the Cougar baseball team moving forward.

“Coach Alberson is an amazing baseball mind who will have that program doing very great things.” he said. “I think it's pretty evident how special that 2001 team was given that they're putting something like this together some 13 years later to still show support for their teammate.”
