Latta hits six home runs in win over Coalgate

(Continued)

Stonewall —

The Lady Wildcats scored another run in the top of the third on a hit by Bailey Hughes and an RBI double by Kaci Trentham.

Latta finished Coalgate off in the bottom of the third with six more runs — including a two-run homer by Brinlee (her second of the game), a solo blast by Anna Wood and a three-run, walk-off shot by Lamb (her second of the game).

“It's a good way to start the tournament. We’re still struggling in spots on defense, but that will get better. I’m real happy with what happened today,” Foster said.

Lamb would finish with five RBIs, while Brinlee drove in four runs. Ten of the 11 Latta players in the lineup had at least one hit.

Latta was scheduled to play the Tushka-Coleman winner today at 3:30 p.m.

Byng 11, Stuart 6

The Lady Hornets used a two-run homer by Kylie Jernigen in the top of the fifth inning to cut Byng’s lead to 7-6, but the Lady Pirates scored four times in the bottom of the inning to finally secure the win.

Byng head coach Andi Grissom was impressed with Stuart, which actually out-hit the Lady Pirates 15-12 and stayed close to her team until the end.

“They’re ranked No. 11 (in Class 2A) for a reason. They only have two losses. Chance (Chapman) is a really good coach, and he gets his teams prepared. They stayed right there with us,” she said. “Like I told the girls, it’s kind of been a search-and-rescue mission at the end, but we find a way to win every time.”

Sydney Fuller jump-started the Byng offense in the bottom of the fifth, leading off with a solo home run. Kaylen Fike — who finished the game 3-for-3 with four RBIs — later added a two-run triple that gave Byng its five-run cushion.
