Roff girls run out of runs

Oklahoma City —

A Roff offense that had steamrolled into the Class 2A State Slow-Pitch Tournament did a vanishing act at the worst of times.

The sixth-ranked Lady Tigers outscored five playoff opponents by a combined score of 65-4 heading into the state tournament, and they defeated No. 16 Okarche 7-1 in a first-round matchup to begin the day Thursday at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.

But in a semifinal showdown with No. 12 Soper, Roff couldn’t get enough big hits with runners in scoring position in a 4-2 loss to the Lady Bears.

The Lady Tigers ended their season with an 18-10 record. Soper (24-12) advanced to the 2A title game but was defeated by 18th-ranked Barnsdall by a 17-11 score. Just minutes before meeting Roff in the semis, Soper had edged No. 5 Pond Creek-Hunter 19-18 in a wild eight-inning first-round contest.

“We were so inconsistent at the plate and any time we did get something started, then we hit it right at them. We just couldn’t get anything going,” said Roff head coach Kathy Gregson. “Slow-pitch is a game of runs and you just have to get on a roll, and we were never able to get it going.”

The Lady Bears never got rolling themselves, but they got enough timely hits to keep Roff and its quiet bats at bay.
