Lady Cougars finish second

Ada —

The Ada Lady Cougars were runners-up at the inaugural Lady Cougar Classic held Monday at a frigid Oak Hills Golf Course.

Durant won the event with an impressive 374 team score, while Ada was comfortable in second at 424. The Latta Lady Panthers captured third place at 442, while Allen was fourth at 499.

“The best word to describe the First Annual Lady Cougar Classic is COLD,” said Ada girls golf coach Ron Anderson. “You always hope for good weather when hosting outdoor events, and today Mother Nature had the lowest score of the day. But despite the weather and a small field of teams, I was very happy with how things went.”

Durant freshman Sydney Youngblood won the medalist crown by shooting an 85 in the bitterly cold conditions. Players endured wind gusts that reached 30 miles per hour. Kiersten Prater of Byng was a stroke off the mark at 86. Prater looked like she was in good shape to capture the individual title after 17 holes, but she pushed her tee shot out of bounds on the last hole of the day and posted a triple bogie.

The Lady Pirates had just three entries in the tournament and didn’t qualify for the team standings. Ashton Johnson will join the Byng team later this season.

“Durant is a pretty solid team from top to bottom. I anticipate them doing very well in 5A competition,” Anderson said. “I can assure you that you will hear the name Sydney Youngblood often the next four years. She has really good skills for a freshman.   She’s long and straight off the tee and pretty good around the green.”

Mary Kathryn Lowry of Ada led the host Lady Cougars with a 99.

“I want to thank Byng, Latta, Allen, Durant and Sequoyah-Tahlequah for attending. A lot of teams would rather not play right after spring break,” Anderson said. “Missing the first day back from school and the lack of practice over the break are obvious reasons to skip this day.”
