Loya looking for a few good swimmers

Ada — The Greater Ada Swim Club, created in 1983, has recently made a tidal wave of changes.

From 1983 until the spring semester of 2012, East Central professor Dr. Anita Walker coached the swim club athletes as well as being one of the founders.

The team is made up of three schools: Ada, Byng and Latta. Swimmers can be anyone from third grade to master swimmer. (A master swimmer is someone who has graduated from high school.)

Walker recently hung up her coach's hat, and her duties as head coach were given to Mila Loya, who had been the assistant coach for two years. When the head coach position opened, Loya was asked to take the role.

The 2012-13 school year was Loya’s first year of head coaching.

“I have my first year under my belt as head coach. It started out a little rough, but as things progressed it got easier,” she said.

The spring of 2012 not only saw Walker leave coaching, but large number of swimmers graduated. This left Loya with a team with very few high school swimmers.

Last year the swim club had six high school-age swimmers, but Loya is working hard to change that. For the 2013-14 school year, the swim team will potentially have up to 14 high school swimmers between Ada and Byng, which is a big jump for this team.

Derrek George, a former Ada High swimmer who graduated in 2012, is the new assistant coach. George said she has wanted to be a coach and to find a way to get back into swimming, so this was a perfect opportunity

for her to do both.

“I will be the assistant coach as long as I can. I want to eventually become the head coach when Mila can’t do it anymore,” said George.

George's will not only help instruct the swimmers during practices, but she will also serve as head coach when Loya is not present.

“I think she is going to be a fantastic asset to the club,” said Loya.

Loya’s goal for the 2013-14 school year is to get more local athletes involved in swimming, especially at the junior high and high school levels.

With a big enough team, Loya said she hopes that the city will be more encouraged to find a newer facility to serve as the team’s headquarters.

Returning swimmers will meet again for the first tine Aug. 26 at 3:30 p.m. at East Central University's Wellness Center to start training for the fall swimming

season. An open tryout for potential new swimmers will take place Sept. 3. Loya welcomes any local athlete to contact her for more information about joining the swim team and the Greater Ada Swim Club at (580) 279-9846 or by email at milaloya@
