Sulphur's Hughes still refuses to lose

Tulsa — Ashley Hughes made her share of contributions in the 2013 All-State small school girls basketball game Wednesday night inside Oral Robert University’s Mabee Center.

Hughes, a member of Sulphur’s undefeated state championship team last season, scored nine points for the Small West, contributing to its 84-54 rout of the Small East.

Hughes again refused to lose.

“I just wanted to come out with a lot of energy,” Hughes said.

She indeed displayed energy, as she scored seven of her points in the first half.

“I’m not very flashy,” she said. “I’m more like a run-and-hustle type of player, so I was able to get some easy layups and some easy putbacks. Our team did a great job of sharing the ball, and that’s how we were able to get the win.”

Like most athletes who have the opportunity, Hughes enjoyed her All-State experience and made memories.

“It was great,” she said. “It was very busy. But overall, it was just fun to come here and all gather together to play with some of the best athletes from across the state.

“It was nice to interact and have some friends that you can keep in touch with as we go all our separate ways to college ball.”

Now on the roster at the University of Tulsa, Hughes had to practice twice a day for TU and the Small West squad, running across town to do both.

“I was running back and forth between practices,” she said.

With high school hoops behind her, Hughes was happy to have been part of the legacy she helped establish at Sulphur.

“Sulphur basketball in general has been totally elevated because of our performance and because of what we did,” she said. “It’s just amazing to see all the younger kids picking it up, traveling to the city, playing with their peers and really making chemistry with them. So I really think what we did for our program is special, and I’m really proud of it.”
