Roff girls hold off Stonewall in two OTs

Stonewall —    In a preview of a first-round Class A district playoff game, the 11th-ranked Roff Lady Tigers outlasted the host Stonewall Lady Longhorns, 55-54, in double overtime on Friday night.

The two teams are scheduled to do battle again in district play in less than two weeks on Feb. 14.

“It was a great game, fun game to coach,” said Stonewall head coach Brian Davis.  “It had a playoff feel. The teams played hard. The fans were loud and into it. We'll get to lace the shoes up and go at it again in a couple of weeks.”

Roff, which improved to 18-4 on the season, received 17 points from Amy Crawford and 13 from Lauren Trimmer. Crawford drained a pair of 3-pointers in the contest, and Trimmer nailed one. Jalee Hood was next on the Lady Tiger scoring chart with seven, and Breecia Crawford contributed six before fouling out. Darcy Bowerman also tallied six points for the winners.

Tana Davis connected on four 3-point jumpers and finished with a game-high 20 points for Stonewall, which fell to 13-10 on the season. She was 5-of-10 shooting from the floor overall, including 4-of-5 from 3-point land and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. Alexis Lambert tacked on 10 points, pulled down five rebounds and recorded a steal for the Lady Longhorns, and Taylor Barrett ended up with nine points (one trey), five boards and a blocked shot.

Shania Bills tossed in seven points and Justice Dees snatched a game-leading 17 rebounds to go with her six points.

Tied at 51 at the end of the first overtime period, Roff scored the first two buckets – one from Amy Crawford and the other from Scott. Tana Davis ultimately countered with a 3-point shot, but it was too little, too late for Stonewall.

In the first OT, Bowerman’s late basket put the Lady Tigers up by a 51-50 count, before Tana Davis made the second of two free shots to send the game to the second extra period.

At the end of regulation, Lambert lifted the Lady Longhorns to a 46-44 lead after hitting the first of two charity tosses. But two late Roff free throws converted by Hood led to a 46-all deadlock at the end of regulation.

C.J. Johnson sank four 3-point shots and finished with 16 points and Zach Lewis added 15 as Roff withstood a Stonewall comeback effort in the fourth quarter.

Joining Johnson and Lewis in double figures was Hunter Larsh with 11 as he drilled three treys in the contest. Teammate Dalton Madden added eight points, including one 3-pointer, and Cade Carpenter followed with seven.

Dakota Morgan’s 15 points, including two treys, fueled the Longhorns and Tanner Dees finished with 14, including one 3-pointer. Rowdy Rodriguez ended up with nine points on three treys in a losing cause.

The two teams combined for 15 three-pointers – eight by Roff and seven by Stonewall.

“We had a stretch between the second and third quarters where we defended well. We got a little complacent in the fourth quarter, and they hit some big shots to keep in interesting,” said Roff head coach Bo Thomason. “Wes’ (Moreland) teams are always going to play hard and play until the end, and they did just that. It was a big win for us.”

The Tigers had a 33-23 halftime advantage and went on a 13-2 run through the third quarter to go up 46-25. Stonewall made it closer by outscoring Roff, 22-13, in the fourth.

The next action for the Stonewall teams will be Tuesday at Calera, while Roff will visit Stuart that same night.
