Allen girls sting Asher in semis

Shawnee —    The youthful Allen Lady Mustangs overcame an eight-point first-half deficit and received balanced scoring in capturing a 43-34 victory over Class B 11th-ranked Asher Thursday night in the semifinals of the Pottawatomie County Tournament at Oklahoma Baptist University’s Noble Complex.

Allen, which improved to 10-5 with the win, faced Davenport in Saturday night’s championship game. The Lady Bulldogs earned a trip to the finals by stunning Dale on a put-back shot at the buzzer.

The Lady Mustangs, despite poor shooting, executed the offense enough to where they totaled 13 assists on their 16 converted field goals.

“It was a good win. Asher has a really good team,” said Allen head coach Jeremy Strong. “We really did a good job attacking the paint.”

Sophomore Charlea Leonard fueled Allen with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor as she collected five rebounds and recorded a team-leading four assists. Alison Sells, another sophomore, followed with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while starter Hannah Heck and Miranda Raney, off the bench, tacked on seven points apiece. Heck and Raney are both sophomores as well.

Heck also keyed the offense with seven assists, and Raney dished out four.

Freshman Faith Caldwell had a big game on the boards by corralling a game-high 12 rebounds.

“When Charlea had some early foul trouble, Faith and Sandra (Howshar) did a good job for us inside,” Strong said.

Trailing 28-26 with 1:41 to go in the third quarter, the Lady Mustangs went on a 17-6 run the rest of the way. Allen closed the third quarter with a 7-0 spurt as Heck knocked down a 3-pointer and scored off an offensive rebound and Leonard hit a bucket with three seconds remaining in the period.

The Lady Mustangs then scored the first four points of the fourth quarter on baskets by Leonard and Raney to make it 37-28 with 6:37 left.

The Lady Indians were unable to get closer than seven.

Ironically, both teams went scoreless for a four-minute-plus span in the fourth quarter.

Tarin Dubler paced Asher with 12 points, while Haley Odell and Tristan Milburn tossed in eight each. The Lady Indians shot just 28.3 percent for the game (13-of-46) and were 66.7 percent (4-of-6) from the free-throw line.

Allen fared a little better from the field at 35.6 percent (16-of-45) and hit 60 percent (6-of-10) of its free-throw tries.
