Seminole football star clutch down stretch in slim victory over Ada boys

Ada — During this past football season, Seminole star Papi White rushed for over 3,200 yards and scored 41 touchdowns.

Through three quarters against the Ada boys basketball team Tuesday night inside the Cougar Activity Center, he was nearly a non-factor.

White took over in the fourth period, scoring seven points, drawing the fourth and fifth fouls on Ada playmaker Cory Kilby and knocking down a tie-breaking free throw with five seconds left in the game to lift Seminole to a 57-56 upset win over the Cougars.

The Chieftains, unranked in Class 4A, improved to 6-2 on the year while No. 13 Ada slipped to 6-3.

“That’s what competitors do. That’s why he’s going to be a Division I football player. Seminole is no stranger. They always have some athletes. They just outcompeted us tonight,” said Ada head coach Ron Anderson.

In the girls game, the Ada offense never quite seemed to get on track, but the Ada defense provided more than enough scoring opportunities in a 40-19 victory over outmatched Seminole.

The Ada girls (No. 6 in Class 4A) improved to 9-3, while Seminole plunged to 1-6.

Seminole 57, Ada 56

White began making big plays at the 4:27 mark, when he drove to the basket and made the layup after drawing Kilby’s fourth foul. He missed the free throw, but Seminole still led 50-47.

Kilby responded by driving to the baseline and finishing at the basket with a two-handed dunk to get Ada within 50-49 while energizing the Cougar Activity Center crowd.

White would strike again on a similar play, as Kilby fouled out trying to stop another one of his drives to the basket. He would make both free throws to put Seminole on top, 52-49, with 3:29 to play.

Ada speedster Jamal Henderson followed with a quick move to the basket for a layup with 3:15 left that made it 52-51.
