Byng dethrones Ada in 4A state tennis

Oklahoma City — The Byng Pirates swept to championships in doubles play while capturing a 2014 Class 4A state title while the Ada Cougars finished runner-up Saturday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

Byng scored 31 points to outdistance Ada, which finished with 18 points. It was the first state championship for the Pirates, who had two first-place finishes, one second and one third on their way to the title while the Cougars had one championship, one third and a sixth-place effort.

“The past two years we’ve been kind of knocking on the door, and this year we finally kicked the door down,” said Byng head coach Alan Simpson. “It was the first time we were the team to beat. It had a different feel to it. The main thing was to not lose sight of what you wanted to accomplish and stay focused.”

Byng’s No. 1 Doubles team of Neil Jorgensen and Kai Jorgensen earned a 6-3, 6-1 decision over the previously unbeaten Chisholm team of Tyler Harmon and Jack Snodgrass, 6-3, 6-1 for the crown. Earlier in the day in the semifinals, the Jorgensen twins picked up a three-set 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 win over the Seminole team of Christian Martin and Hunter Ogle. The Jorgensen tandem finished with a perfect 4-0 record in the state tournament and ended up with a 24-11 mark for the season.

“The Jorgensens played Chisholm four days earlier and lost to them 6-4, 6-3 in the regional finals, but we beat them 6-3, 6-1 this time,” Simpson said. “Those Chisholm kids had not lost a match all season and had not even lost a set this year. It’s an indication of how far we’ve come.”

At No. 2 Doubles, the Pirates’ Montana Sellers and Paul Snyder rolled to an easy 6-0, 6-0 victory over Henryetta’s Kade Bailey and Eli Palmer. Earlier Saturday, Sellers and Snyder earned a tough 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 decision over the Ada team of Hunter Frazier and Memo Martin. The Sellers-Snyder team ended up with a perfect 4-0 mark for the state tourney and 27-9 for the year.
