Edmond — Checotah limited the Byng Pirates to just four base hits as the Wildcats knocked off Byng, 5-2, on Thursday in the first round of the Class 4A state baseball tournament at Edmond Santa Fe High School.
Checotah starter Jack Christian held Byng to just one earned run off the four hits with six walks and three strikeouts in six innings of work. Caleb Knight struck out two in the seventh to record the save.
The Pirate loss overshadowed a stout pitching effort from Reid Wall, who scattered eight hits and four walks while striking out 11 in six innings. Shawn Treat took the mound in the seventh.
Half of Byng’s hits came off the bat of Sawyer Walton, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Teammate Andrew Daniel was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
The Pirates took a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second when Gage Wall reached on an error and ultimately scored off Walton’s run-scoring single.
However, the Wildcats responded with a pair of unearned runs in the third inning off an error for a 2-1 Checotah lead and then scored twice in the fourth off a Wyatt Hatridge two-run single to make it 4-1. Hatridge went 3-for-3 from the plate with two runs batted in and scored twice.
Byng picked up its only other score in sixth to pull within 4-2 as Hunter Capps led off with a single. Walter later hit a one-out single and Daniel followed with an RBI single to score Capps.
Hunter Collins’ run-scoring single in the seventh closed out the scoring for Checotah, which eventually fell in the semifinals to Dewey, 8-3.
